Welcome to the Grauwackemuseum
welcome to Lindlar – a town rich in stones! For many hundreds of years, Grauwacke, a high-quality and versatile natural stone, has been extracted here in the heart of the Bergisches Land. The area around Brungerst, a hill north of the town centre, is particularly well-suited for processing due to its excellent quality. Generations of workers – also known as “stonecutters” or colloquially as “Steenkühler” – have made their living from the steep rock walls. And to this day, there are still two active quarry operations on-site.
LindlarTouristik and Bau-, Grundstücks- und Wirtschaftsförderungs GmbH der Gemeinde Lindlar invite you on an exciting journey through the history of Grauwacke. Immerse yourself in the 390-million-year-old history of Bergisch Grauwacke: touch real fossils, listen to twelve fictional characters as they recount their diverse work in the quarry and life in Lindlar, and take a look at a modern quarry. Right at the beginning of the exhibition, a real highlight awaits you: the oldest forest in the world! You can also find well-founded background information in our free museum guide, which summarises the spoken content for you. And these twelve characters will also guide you through the three sections Stone-Old, Stone-Hard and Stone-Rich on this website.
To explore the history of Bergisch Grauwacke, interviews with contemporary eyewitnesses will continue to be conducted in cooperation with the LVR Open-Air Museum Lindlar and documented for future generations. Tell us about your connection to the quarries in a personal conversation!
